Who we areLAHPERD is an acronym for the Louisiana Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance. Founded in 1934, this organization aims to improve the quality of life through health, fitness, and recreational activities. LAHPERD is an affiliate of SHAPE America (Society of Health and Physical Educators) The members of LAHPERD consist of teachers, administrators, dance instructors, recreation supervisors, fitness directors, college students, allied health specialists, exercise physiologists, athletic trainers, etc. Members are included in all sixty-four parishes and all universities in the state. The Benefits of MembershipMembership in LAHPERD is on an annual basis. The membership period begins on June 1 and ends on May 31 of the subsequent year, regardless of when membership was initiated. Membership categories include active professionals, undergraduate and graduate students in Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and/or Dance, and retired professionals. Each division represents the significant disciplines within health, physical education, recreation, and dance; each division comprises sections that represent the more specific focus areas of the division. In addition to divisions and section chairs, several committees are responsible for carrying out non-division-specific work for the organization. All division, section, and committee leaders are members of the Board of Directors; however, only the Executive Committee and division leaders hold voting privileges. Current members are encouraged to become involved with the organization through divisions, sections, and committees.
